| New
Classroom for Wychwood School
The new Classroom
at Wychwood School involved the infilling of an existing courtyard.
The site was restricted, with single storey buildings with low
eaves to three sides and a two storey brick classroom with high
windows to the remaining side.
The solution
was the construction of an atrium over the existing courtyard
with a glazed roof to adjacent circulation areas, as it was critical
in the design to retain daylight to the existing classrooms. The
glazed roof is supported from a cantilevered steel frame, which
incorporated a wide parapet gutter, designed for easy maintenance.
The environmental
requirements of the space were analysed in detail to address the
potential problems of solar gain, heat loss and ventilation. The
result is a user friendly, light and airy space within the confines
of the existing buildings. The relative simplicity of design ensured
a cost effective solution to the needs of the client.
