House Preparatory School - Library Project
The East Wing
of the Quadrangle at Winchester House contained a hippodrome which
was a large unheated space where generations of boys had kicked
footballs. The school decided to use this space to provide an
exhibition, meeting space with a servery and wcs to be used
by pupils and parents. The project also included the conversion
of a redundant double storey height room into a galleried library
and the refurbishment of two adjacent classrooms newly linked
to the library.
The building
is Grade II listed and the work involved required full approval
of the Conservation Officer and English Heritage. This project
was planned with a small project team representing the school
including the Headmaster, Bursar and key Governors. The building
work followed a traditional procurement route with competitive
tendering. The work on site was compressed to fall largely within
the Summer vacation with minimum disruption to the staff and pupils.
