Classrooms for West Ruislip Elementary School
Built in the
early 1960s, the school was constructed of a steel frame
with cedar wood timber infill panels and large areas of single
glazing, with flat roofs supported on wood wool slabs. The original
building used system components to provide quick and efficient
construction, however this was not thermally efficient. It was
also apparent that asbestos materials had been used and required
removal.
The alterations
and extensions were built using dry construction techniques to
reduce the contract period and the work was phased into three
sections separating out each of the two blocks and sports centre.
The work was carried out in 8 week summer vacation periods in
three successive years. To upgrade thermal performance the entire
school and sports hall was re-clad using insulated aluminium panelling
and double glazed methods.
Following the
successful completion, the scheme was awarded a Pan European Merit
Award by the United States Government In Recognition of
Achievement in Design Excellence.
