Sydenham’s new multi-ethnic community centre

The much anticipated multi-ethnic community centre in Sydenham, Leamington Spa opened in November 2002.

The centre features a youth services provision, day care services for the elderly, a cafe, training/seminar rooms and a community hall. It will be used by Warwickshire Social Services and Warwickshire College.

Plans were produced following an extensive consultation exercise which identified a social need in Sydenham. Acanthus Clews were then asked by Sydenham Neighbourhood Initiatives to design a building suitable for the whole community.

The result is an innovative solution which is highly cost-effective both to build and to run. Widespread use of natural daylight and thermally-efficient materials will keep energy costs down. In addition, considerable financial help has arrived in the form of a record Lottery Grant which will contribute around two thirds of the cost.
