Visitors Centre at Sulgrave Manor
Sulgrave Manor
education centre is a courtyard development in the grounds of
Sulgrave Manor, the Grade I Listed building which was the ancestral
home of George Washington.
The range of
new buildings are of traditional stone vernacular style with a
new hall constructed in green oak to accommodate 100 people. The
project was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to the value
of £750,000.
The aim of
the new courtyard development is to relieve the pressure of visitors,
numbering 35,000 per year and school parties numbering 12,000
upon the 17th century manor house, which is small and vulnerable.
The new facilities provide alternative spaces for visitors to
congregate and enjoy the formal landscape gardens which were designed
by Sir Reginald Stonefield in the 1920s
The scheme
was shortlisted for a Carpenters Award in 1999.
