| Radical
conversion of barn
Sulgrave Farm
was a large early 19th century brick barn in open countryside
just outside the village.
The barn was
a redundant farm building and the client wished to convert it
into a single dwelling. The clients brief specifically required
a spacious house rather than a barn so a radical approach was
called for.
Acanthus Clews
plans were for a complete conversion of the building, including
having double storey height in the ground floor hall and creating
a large reception room. Maximum use of space was achieved through
designing the ground floor higher than normal and taking the first
floor into the roof space.
A specific
and potentially controversial aspect was the design for large
floor-to-ceiling sash windows. Consent for these was achieved
due to the quality of the design and because the building was
not listed.
New floors
were introduced along with two hardwood staircases leading to
bedrooms with en suite bathrooms.
Attractive
brick detail on the cart opening had survived and was reproduced
on all windows.
