Projects: CONSERVATION

Restorations to St Marys Church, Bloxham

The Church is one of the grandest Churches in the country and the elegant tower and spire are a focal point for miles around. The present building is mainly C14th and C15th but there was a C12th Church on the site from which two doorways and other fragments remain. The perpendicular Milcombe Chapel built in the C15th is a fine addition. There is a splendid display of C14th and C15th tracery and lively sculptures that make the conservation of a building such an interesting and rewarding continuing project.

To date work on the Church has included the conservation of the Milcombe Chapel window, where the rusting of ironwork and general erosion of the stonework caused substantial damage. The repair included the pinning of the stonework, replacement of a section of stonework and the releading of the windows using the historic glass. The ornate pinnacles were also conserved in a subsequent programme of works and received the SPAB John Betjeman Award

Adjacent to the Church a derelict ancient court house building has been rebuilt to form new parish rooms and a barn converted to form a new Vicarage.
