Winners - EASA Presidents Award 2011
The Presidents’ Award is a national award for innovative, high quality church architecture. It is sponsored jointly by the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association (EASA) and the National Churches Trust, whose Presidents are the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.
The 2011 award was presented by Michael Hoare, Chairman of the National Churches Trust, at Westminster Cathedral Hall to Michael and Camilla for the New Sustainable Monastery, Mucknell Abbey.
"A new monastery is a big story for the church world – it has re-used existing redundant buildings, it has added interesting new buildings and it has good environmental credentials, all whilst offering a worthy function for the church. The Oratory alone is worthy of the award, let alone the whole development." Michael Hoare
ACA’s design for a sustainable new monastic home provides a cohesive vision for Mucknell Farm, responding positively to the community’s specific needs. The farmhouse was replaced with a new community building providing, initially, 14 monastic cells and space for a further 4 cells, along with studios and community facilities. Historic buildings were converted to provide domestic, guest and office accommodation including a refectory and a library, and within the heart of the complex, a new Oratory as a dedicated place of worship.
