Llandaff Cathedral’s famous statues restored
Under the guidance of Cathedral Architect, Michael Clews, the eight statues in the Pritchard Tower at Llandaff Cathedral have just been unveiled following a major repair and refurbishment programme.

The statues represent the eight nations of the world and are housed two to each side of the tower. They were originally carved in the 19th century to represent American, Chinese, Saxon, Hindu, Roman, Ethiopian, Greek and Jew.

The work involved the complete recarving of three of the statues and the cleaning and restoring of the other five. They had all been in a very poor condition as a result of weather erosion and nesting pigeons.

Scaffolding shrouds the Pritchard Tower during refurbishment.
