Refurbishment to Lincoln's Inn

A major refurbishment of the Grade II* Great hall is being conducted for the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn. The Great Hall was designed by Philip Hardwick and built in the mid-1840's, extended by Gilbert Scott in 1872 and is used by the Inn as a focus for their activities.

The project is to refurbish the existing kitchen and Treasury Offices, together with providing additional space for the Inn's educational needs formed under the east terrace. The extension links to the main building at the lower ground floor level. The design of the new extension adopts a contemporary approach with glazing overlooking the lower terrace formed between this and the original building.

Alterations internally include the forming of a mezzanine over the present kitchen to provide a reception area, meeting room and to solve the present problems of circulation within the building. The Inn is to be maintained in operation throughout the construction work and the work is, therefore, to be phased to enable this to be achieved.

WINTER 2004 - UPDATE

The first phase of Acanthus Clews’ refurbishment scheme in the Grade II* Great Hall at Lincoln’s Inn is complete.

The extensive and highly complex work to this important Victorian building has involved the highest quality design and construction in three main areas.

The completely remodelled south vestibule provides members with an appropriately elegant approach to the Great Hall in the form of a modern oak, steel and glass stairway. The design incorporates finger-jointed oak treads over a folded steel plate that wraps around vertical glass planes and floats above a black sandstone platform.

A new multi-function area has been created by the insertion of a mezzanine floor within the existing double height space above the kitchen. The stone vaulted ceiling has been revealed and enhanced by special lighting to create a relaxing atmosphere. A new entrance has also been introduced, linked to the newly paved East Terrace via a steel and glass bridge.

Beneath the Great Hall, the basement floor has been remodelled to incorporate state of the art kitchen facilities. The practice worked closely with the chefs and the kitchen installation consultants to ensure the area was laid out and organised for maximum efficiency and smooth operation.

The next phase comprises the re-planning of the north offices to create a modern open-plan working environment. The work also involves the refurbishment of the reception and will incorporate bespoke furniture and lighting.
