| Holy
Cross Fire Damaged Music Room
All schools
undergo a continuous maintenance programme during the Summer holidays.
June 1999 will however stay in the minds of the Bursar and the
Headmistress of Holy Cross for a long time. The roof maintenance
work unhappily resulted in a fire which spread rapidly through
the 19th Century Music Room. Fortunately, no one was injured and
after assessing the full extent of the damage with engineers and
loss adjusters we prepared a full refurbishment design.
The Music Room
abutted an area of the school which housed cloakrooms and wcs
in timber-clad extensions with limited life. As a result of analysis
and a design review of the area, we produced a plan to integrate
new facilities and provide a new link corridor and cloister between
the proposed Junior Department and the existing school. The refurbished
Music Room has been given a gallery and a complete new interior
and roof structure. Temporary classrooms and wcs were provided
on the site to mitigate the loss of facilities through the fire
damage.
The extent
of the damage to facilities such as mechanical and electrical
installations has been a careful consideration and the work which
is close to the heart of the school will be complete in December
2000.
