Restoration works at Halton House, Aylesbury

Halton House near Aylesbury is a substantial, French Chateau Style, Mansion House, built between 1881 & 1883. Since 1917 it has been used to provide the Officer’s Mess to RAF HaIton.

The building has many fascinating features including leadwork to the building which is exquisite in detail, particularly the lead dormer window cladding and the viewing tower to the North Elevation, where fine leadwork covers the base, columns, roof and steps.

The interiors have large volume spaces with grand chandeliers, domed rooflights and ornate plasterwork. The Dining Room is particularly impressive being ornately decorated in gold leaf.

Acanthus Clews Architects carried out a Quadrennial Inspection in 1993 on the house for the Property Services Agency and were subsequently called upon by their successors Unicorn Consultancy Services to provide a Specification and Schedule of Works for essential repairs to the fabric on a continuing basis

The works cover a variety of challenging conservation topics including stonework conservation, renewal and repair to leadwork, repair of composite metal and timber windows, repairs to cast iron handrails & railings to the viewing platform, works to the terraces and the restoration of a spectacular glass dome.

The dome, which is situated over the central Salon is formed by an inner and outer dome, both of glass with steel framing. The inner dome is shallower in height with double curved glass of fine pyramidal obscurations. The outer dome, also double curved, with an irregular obscured glass, is taller in form and supports the grand golden chandelier, which was also restored as part of the project.
