House Restoration at Coleorton Hall
Coleorton
Hall is a fine Grade II listed mansion house and gardens near
Ashby de la Zouche. It was originally designed by George Dance
for Sir George Beaumont in the early 1800s, with a subsequent
second storey added by Cockerill in 1848. The hall sits in an
important historic landscape with picturesque garden, ponds and
woodland. The original garden, known for its literary and artistic
associations, inspired Samuel Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Sir
Walter Scott and John Constable.
Until
recently the site was owned by the National Coal Board and had
been unsympathetically developed as its regional headquarters.
A scheme has been prepared to convert the hall, stables and other
outbuildings to residential use, allowing for rebuilding of the
derelict buildings and features of historic value. Within the
grounds, a sympathetically designed residential development has
been proposed as part of the master plan for the site. The new
development will also help to finance the restoration of the gardens
and landscape.
