| New
hall for Carrdus School, Overthorpe, Banbury
The
new Hall at Carrdus School is designed to maximise the multi-functional
use of the affordable space provided in the plan. It is a major
addition to the independent day preparatory school in Banbury.
The
site is restricted, to the rear of the existing Edwardian Country
House Overthorpe Hall.
The
design is contemporary in style with a square plan, steel frame
clad in carefully detailed brickwork, with clerestory fenestration
and a central lantern providing natural light and ventilation
in the centre of the space. The environmental design included
an acoustic study of the space which allows for a single singing
voice of a seven year old to be heard by the schools 250 parents
in a concert, and also for the hall to be used by large musical
groups who hire the hall for recitals. The Hall is also used for
teaching, theatrical presentations, games and gymnastics.
For
a small independent school the cost of such a venture is a major
undertaking. We acted as architects and project managers with
the construction being largely sub-let to keep the costs to a
minimum.
