Restorations at Bilton Grange School
Bilton Grange
School recently unveiled the renovation of its historic library
to celebrate the buildings 150th Anniversary. The library
was designed by A.W.N. Pugin, responsible for the original interior
design of The House of Commons and the House of Lords.
The restoration
works were supervised and managed by Acanthus Clews Architects
who have a nationally established reputation for conservation
work. The work primarily involved cleaning and restoring the library
furniture, doors, panelling and stonework. Original painted timber
panels above the chimney pieces and around the frieze were brought
back to life by art conservators. Once restored the interior was
hung in hand painted wallpaper from an original Pugin design.
Due to the
architectural and historic importance of the building, listed
Grade ll, Clews Architects have been fully supported by English
Heritage and the local authority conservation officer in acquiring
consents for the work. The restoration has been commended by the
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with a Craftsmanship
in Building Award.
