| Listed
barn converted to contemporary family home
Previously
a substantial redundant stone farm building on the edge of a five-acre
field in Warwickshire, this barn is now a highly crafted and individual
family home incorporating a number of innovative green technologies.
Acanthus Clews produced a detailed design for the sensitive conversion
of the listed barn. The existing large volumes within the barn
were retained and extensions were added resulting in a substantial
courtyard-building complex.
The client was particularly committed to developing a strategy
for energy saving, sustainability and recycling into the fabric
of the property. The specification of materials was very carefully
considered to compliment the architecture and minimise embodied
energy. Local materials and resources were used where possible.
A highly sophisticated mechanical water system was installed incorporating
a heat pump arrangement and water pipes laid within the ground,
for heating and hot water. In addition, rainwater is recycled
and filtered for a number of domestic uses including drinking
water.
Acanthus Clews worked very closely with the client and specialist
tradesmen to develop a cohesive detail language, which translates
seamlessly from room to room and to the external spaces beyond.
Significant detail elements include the fine ashlar stonework
and oak joinery throughout, and a purpose-made metal and glass
spiral staircase with etched glass balustrading.
The extension has provided additional accommodation of a snug,
kitchen, utility room and bedroom plus a spacious basement.
