| Contemporary
design for North Oxford house
Acanthus
Clews obtained planning permission for a new, contemporary family
house in an area characterised by large Victorian villa-style
houses.
The main feature of this innovative scheme is the front face in
a glazed, aluminium-framed, two storey curtain walling system
that maximises natural light and ventilation. Behind the glazing
is an open plan space with double height in the central section.
The other three sides are constructed in traditional brick while
the roof is a single ply membrane with a shallow-pitched asymmetric
slope.
To make full use of the limited space available and to provide
the maximum privacy possible, the front of the property has been
enclosed by a brick wall in the style of a mews courtyard.
Accommodation consists of four bedrooms, all with en suite facilities
and one in the form of a self-contained guest flat.
The entire site has been transformed from having garages and an
electricity sub-station into a striking dwelling designed for
modern living.
