| New
hall and classrooms for Ayscoughfee Hall School
Ayscoughfee
School required a new multi-function hall, together with music
rooms and classrooms, to be ready for the start of the new school
year.
The school buildings primarily consist of a Georgian Grade II*
listed building, known as Welland Hall, and a number of late single-storey
framed buildings. The space for the new accommodation was created
by demolishing the single-storey buildings.
However, due to the sensitive nature of the site, the scheme was
subject to close liaison with the local planning authority, English
Heritage and local and national amenity organisations. As a result
Acanthus Clews were involved in a detailed consultation process
lasting almost two years.
The practice’s proposals found creative solutions to all
the critical issues, particularly the height of the new building,
its relation to the main building and the choice of materials.
The style has been kept deliberately simple, reflecting the proportions
and clean lines of the adjoining listed property.
Instead of the traditional tender approach the architects used
a two-stage tender in order to appoint a builder at an early stage
and help meet a very limited time scale.
