New art facilities for Chenderit School

Chenderit School in North Oxfordshire required new art facilities to match its award of visual arts status.

Headmaster John Childs approached Acanthus Clews Architects with a brief to design something inspirational and strictly within budget, for use by the school and the public.

The result is an art gallery with an exposed steel-framed structure that enhances the current main entrance and provides access for the public. The roof is fully glazed and extends beyond the footprint of the gallery to provide a covered way into the school.

Meanwhile, the new studio workshop has been designed as a simple extension to the existing art block facilities. It is essentially an open plan, single storey space, lit from above to allow large-scale sculpture and painting projects to be undertaken.

Former Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Heseltine, officially opened the new facilities on 3rd September 2003 and, to coincide with the opening, an exhibition of the work of artist Anthony Green was staged.

The gallery has been named The Michael Heseltine Gallery.
